Official dress codes and what to wear The first big rule is: pay attention to the invitation, read it carefully! You want to make an entrance that unleashes a “Wow!” and not an “Oh, no!” Nothing is more embarrassing as walking in a black-tie affair in casual street wear – even though it’s unfortunately quite in common in Germany and especially in Berlin City society events. So let’s start from casual and work up to black-and-white tie Casual Actually everything goes – from jeans with a nice top to a dress with cardigan and boots, skirt with pullover and flats…. So be creative and enjoy the freedom you have here. But don’t take it too easy. Someone makes the effort to throw a party and invites you, so make an effort too and be on your best behavior.
Smart casual No jeans, no T-shirts – you can go for pants with a fun top or skirts and dresses of course. The rules “no jeans, no T-shirts” are the same for men. Pleated pants with a button-down and a cardigan or chinos with a shirt and a blazerare a great option.
Cocktail As the name says, it’s time for your cocktail dress. Cocktail dresses are short, exciting dresses worn with killer high heels and chunky jewelry like big cocktail ring and statement necklaces. Men go for suits in various colors – even shinier or extravagant versions are aloud here – and great matching shirts with tie.
Black tie Black tie is mostly the dress code for big evening events like galas, awards etc. Women are expected to wear long elegant gowns or at least cocktail dresses. Complete tuxedos are the go for men. This is the time to shine. Take a risk and avoid being just another woman in a long black dress.
White tie “White tie” is king among the dress codes, but there are only few events like this left. Women have to wear long ball gowns and men are expected in tailcoats.
